The plot of Doom 2016 (what you need to know before the release of Doom: Eternal)

Hello! Before the release of Doom: Eternal, I decided to replay the previous part and realized that the plot mostly flew past me. So I read the in-game code a little, watched the videos, scoured the Internet and seemed to have put together a more or less complete picture, from the background to the ending. Well, I decided, why waste the goodness in vain, I’ll make a video and a text retelling.

I could have made a mistake somewhere, since there are a lot of blank spots in the game, you have to figure something out, but it seems to have turned out quite coherently.

For each more or less important term I have attached a link to the translated code for the game – for those who want to read in more detail.

If you are lazy reading, but want to refresh the story in your head, no problem, watch the video:

Background

Once upon a time there was a world called Argent D’Nur. Ghosts lived there – elementals, whom the inhabitants of the world revered and considered almost gods.

And these Ghosts had defenders – the Night Guardians, endowed with incredible power.

Demons from Hell have long wanted to conquer Argent D’Nur. But their attempts were in vain. Until one day, one of the Night Guardians betrayed the Ghosts.

He asked the demons to bring his son, who died on the battlefield, back from the dead. In return, he led them to the sleeping Ghosts. The demons put a curse on the Ghosts and, having curbed their powers, created a Well that allowed them to travel between worlds.

The son was returned to the traitor – albeit in the form of a demon. And they called upon the Icon of Sin, which brought a lot of suffering to the inhabitants of Argent, after which Argent-D’Nur was swallowed up by Hell.

But there was a warrior – the leader of the Night Guardians, who, even after the defeat of his world, did not give up, but began to destroy the demons, taking revenge on them for all the pain that they caused to his homeland.

He was so furious that the demons even gave him a nickname – Doom Slayer. Or the Doom Slayer.

In his wanderings through Hell, our hero met a seraphim who blessed him with incredible strength and speed. And a certain heretic, whose name is not mentioned, forged him the strongest armor.

He destroyed the greatest demons – the Lords of Hell created the Titan, which took its power from all the demons destroyed by the Doom Slayer, specifically in order to deal with him. But this did not help either – Titan fell.

But not by force, but by cunning, the demon priests found a way to lure the Doom Slayer into a trap. They could not kill him, but they imprisoned him in a sarcophagus, on which they left his mark – terrifying the demons and reminding them that he should not be released.

And so, the Executioner of Doom https://versaillescasino.co.uk/games/ woke up in his grave. He is chained and already hears the vile moans of demons – but soon they fall silent – not without the help of the Executioner.

Standing next to him is his armor – which, despite the passage of years, still fits like a glove.

We are immediately contacted by a certain Dr. Samuel Hayden. Wants to get to know us better and cooperate. But we don’t care much about his chatter. But I wonder where all these demons come from? But to find out the source of the demonic threat, you need to turn on the satellite, which is what we will do

On the surface of Mars, the Slayer of Doom stretches his bones, having destroyed a couple of dozen demons, and when he turns on the satellite, he learns that he will still have to meet Hayden – he blocks the information we need and asks us to come to the Vega terminal. Here you have to make a small digression.

Samuel Hayden – head of the UAC. Previously, he fell ill with brain cancer, but decided to transfer the surviving parts of this organ into the body of a three-meter robot. This helped him not only survive, but also participate in expeditions to Hell.

Vega is an artificial intelligence that controls the operation of almost the entire UAC complex on Mars.

Having reached the Vega terminal, we silently communicate with Hayden. He gives Vega the go-ahead to show us statistics on the incident. The statistics are disappointing – most of the personnel are dead, the rest have turned into demons. Only Hayden, Olivia Pierce and, in fact, our hero survived. Time to talk about Olivia.

Olivia Pierce – biochemist who worked on the Lazarus Project. She fell ill with scoliosis, but agreed to an experiment during which a titanium exoskeleton was integrated into her spine. Now she can walk, but she is in constant severe pain.

It is from the Lazarus complex, where Olivia worked, that all the demonic evil spirits emerge. I’ll get ahead of myself a little, but the reason for it all is that she entered into a contract with an unknown demon who promised her something, alas, no one knows what. I think, at a minimum, to get rid of the severe pain that constantly torments her. After this, Olivia began to gather followers, who quickly came to the conclusion that sacrifices were cool. And they began to deal with them in order to open a stable portal to Hell.

Our conversation is interrupted by a signal that a big boom may soon occur at the steel mill due to overheating. Naturally, we will have to deal with this.

During the showdown we meet Olivia there. Apparently, she plans to use the Argent Tower to open a portal to Hell.

Another retreat.

The main goal of the UAC corporation is energy production, since an energy crisis has occurred on Earth and something had to be done about it. Fortunately, a certain Argent fault was discovered on Mars, they learned how to extract Argent plasma from it and process it into Argent energy. It’s clear? Maybe not very much, but not that important either. After all, we’re just recalling the plot of the game here, and not trying to describe every little detail in detail, otherwise this text will drag on too long. But for those interested, I think it’s worth reading the code.

Argent Tower. A huge structure with the help of which Argent energy is extracted. But Olivia Pierce wants to use it for her own evil purposes, which means the mining must be stopped. To do this, you will have to carefully remove 3 Argent filters from the connectors. I said take it out carefully? Well, the Doom Slayer is hardly familiar with such words. In fact, Samuel asked this carefully, and our hero simply knocked out the filters with his shoe – so that it was no longer possible to resume energy production, and the demons could no longer penetrate our world.

While we are engaged in destruction and anarchy, Olivia somewhere finds an Argent battery, the power of which will be quite enough to still open this ill-fated portal. She goes to the top of the Argent Tower, and we, having tried on the cap of one famous plumber, have to catch up with her on our own two feet.

We catch up, but according to the law of the genre, we don’t have time for some seconds, and Olivia activates the battery, jumps into a beam of Argent energy, and we are pulled after her – straight to Hell.

Surprisingly, what awaits us in hell are not fans of violent computer games, but even more demons. We are no strangers. Having passed through crowds of enemies, we reach a very familiar place – a tomb where the sarcophagus with our Dumgai was located for a long time. He was found by Hayden along with a research group. And using the portal I transferred it to the UAC complex. Fortunately, the demons honor the technological achievements of people, and the portal remains in the same place. We use it for its intended purpose and get back to Mars.

And everything here sucks. The Argent Tower is destroyed, there is a portal above it, and it must be closed urgently. The demonic invasion began in Olivia’s laboratories – that’s where Hayden sends us.

Along the way we end up in his office and see him in person for the first time. Although he’s a robot, so… not quite live. Well, you get the idea. He doesn’t waste time and hangs a prototype of interdimensional snares on our suit – with the help of them, Hayden will be able to pull us out of Hell at any moment.

The doctor also talks about the Spiral Stone – an artifact in the form of… a stone, thanks to which scientists have acquired most of the knowledge about Hell and Argent energy. And it was he who led the researchers to the sarcophagus with Doomguy.

Once in Olivia’s laboratory, we see that she conducted experiments on demons. For example, mancubuses with guns and armor are her work.

We find the Spiral Stone, and it, in turn, shows us a vision about the Crucible – an artifact that, apparently, will help close the portal to Hell.

But for him we will have to go again, ironically, to Hell. And for this you need another Argent battery. The closest one is embedded in a Cyberdemon imprisoned nearby.

After a fight in two acts, we find ourselves in Hell. There, suddenly, we fight demons, and in the end we recapture the crucible, after which Hayden pulls us back to Mars with the help of snares.

Now we need to go to Hell again – but to a different place. Namely – to the Well, which was discussed in the prehistory. In order to get there, you need a very powerful release of energy. It can only be created by destroying Vega. He cannot commit ritual seppuku, so again he has to do everything himself. Having almost pressed the cherished button, our hero decides to save a backup copy of Vega to a flash drive. Secret from Hayden, of course.

Vega explodes, we go to hell, we kill monsters, we find Ghosts. They feed the Well with their energy, so we stick the Crucible into each of them and close it.

At the end we meet Olivia Pierce – scared, covered in blood. She says that the demons promised her so much – and then becomes a sacrifice so that the final boss of the game – the Lady of Spiders – will appear.

Having shot the Lady in the mouth from the BFG, we see that Hayden is again pulling us towards him, but this time our immobility is prolonged. Hayden takes the Crucible from us and directly hints that we will only hinder him, and with the help of the Crucible he will be able to resume energy supplies to Earth. He cannot kill the Executioner of Doom, so he simply teleports to an unknown direction (probably to Hell). But in the end he says that they will definitely meet again. End.

Something like this. I didn’t describe everything in as much detail as I already said – the goal is simply to remind the plot to those who played, or quickly familiarize those who did not play. Personally, I sometimes missed such texts.

And yes, it’s quite possible that something will be twisted in Doom: Eternal, so I don’t take into account the entire flow of information that is now coming from the developers about it. At least because, frankly, I don’t like to find out everything about the game before release. So maybe CANON is no longer the same, my text is outdated, the author has disgraced himself.

I apologize in advance for any mistakes, this is my first such text in many years.
